NaPoWriMo #2

So it’s NaPoWriMo and I’d ummed and ahhed about doing it but decided not to – mostly because I’m terrified.  But if life has taught me anything it’s that I get a lot out of doing things that I want to do but am totally shit scared about.  So, here I am.  Giving it a go.  Bear in mind I am very much an amateur.  Lots of roughness around edges.

My first offering:

Journey of a Lurgy

this lurgy first camped
in the base of my throat
where it crouched lumpen
over my voice box
it then found hand holds in
the fleshy folds of my oesophagus
and hauled itself up to my soft palate
where it wrapped its
globular fingers around
my uvula and streaked
thin razors of pain into my tonsils
my unwitting tongue carried on its
muscular business
only to find difficulty at every turn
finally this mucus filled gremlin
embedded its last
foul feeling into my nasal cavity
where it pushes hard into my head
and delights at all the sniffing

  • I like the mix of anatomical specifics with what feels like really heavy language. I also dig the upward progression in this poem. Well done.

Thanks so much for your comment Allison. It’s really interesting to have some analytical feedback. At this stage I still feel my writing is very much by feel, like I don’t have much control. Hopefully the discipline NaPoWriMo requires will help me get the craft side of things a bit more within my grasp.
